5 Years of the American Autoflower Cup

Five years ago, a small crew of us got together in LA. We wanted to prove autoflowers deserved their own stage

Back then, they still carried the old reputation. Easy to grow, sure, but nothing worth writing home about. We were tired of hearing it. For years, we'd watched breeders quietly do work nobody outside the scene ever saw, work that could stand next to anything on the photoperiod side. 

So we built a national autoflower breeding competition and brought in Jeremy Norrie to curate it. Jeremy was one of the earliest people in the US to bet on autos back when almost nobody else would. We just hoped enough people showed to make it worth it.

The entries blew past anything we'd planned for, and that's when we knew. The room was small that first year, but you could feel it. This wasn't going to be a one-off. It was just the beginning.

How far it's come

Every edition since, the room has gotten fuller, and the bar has gone up right along with it. 

The secret little niche meetup turned into one of the most anticipated autoflower events in the US, drawing breeders and growers from all over the country and, more and more, from outside it too.

The numbers back it up. In 2025, we pulled close to 80 entries across the board. Atlas Seeds set a new potency record at 30.33% THC with Mendo Breath Auto, and Love Bomb Auto from Twenty20 Mendocino took Best New Strain. That was also the year we added Best Auto Hash, because autos had started holding their own in solventless rosin and bubble hash, not just in flower.

Then 2026 went and topped it. 75 flower entries, 19 hash entries, a record 33.88% THC set by Mephisto Genetics, and Fast Buds named Best Autoflower Breeder by the community.

Every category got harder to win, and that old gap people used to point to between autos and photos keeps getting harder to find.

What we actually judge

The Cup was never about one trophy. Highest THC is lab-verified, so the potency talk stays honest, and nobody's guessing. 

Best Autoflower Breeder stays with the community through a public vote, and past winners like Fast Buds and Mephisto Genetics have genuinely shaped where these genetics are headed. Best New Strain goes to the breeders willing to take a swing, and Best Auto Hash keeps the extractors right in the middle of the conversation. 

Put it all together, and you get an honest read on the whole category, top to bottom. Where the potency sits, who's pushing flavor, and which new names are worth watching.

Behind the scenes

People see the trophies. What they don't always see is the week that goes into earning one.

Every year we bring the judges out to a house in Hollywood for a few days of nonstop blind testing, everything scored side by side, flower and concentrates, everyone working off the same level playing field. 

The panel has turned into a real who's who of the culture: Kyle Kushman, Danny Danko, David Downs, Jenn Doe, Maxwell Pharms, IcanTHC, MadManPlant, Jordan Harker, and Austin Kress, aka Stoney McBlaze. 

Some of them talk each sample out together as a group. Others put their heads down and score on their own. Dr. Dabber even sent over their new Switch2 units so the concentrate judging ran clean.

Those few days end up being half competition and half family reunion. 

The long testing sessions roll into late nights out in a city plenty of us have history with, and by the time the awards come around, everybody's dialed in. This year the testing averaged around 26%, with a handful of entries pushing past 30. That kind of number used to be a ceiling. Now it's just where the strong ones land. And none of it happens without the sponsors who keep showing up for us year after year. 

Elements and RAW on papers, AC Infinity kitting out the winners with grow gear, plus Grove Bags, Neptune's Harvest, Doctor Zymes, and the rest all pitching in.

The real reason we show up

Sure, we crown winners, and we make plenty of noise about the breeders moving things forward. But take the trophies off the table completely, and the thing that keeps pulling us back is still just standing there in the room: the people.

It starts before the Cup even opens its doors. Intake is a whole Pre-Party these days, samples dropped off over pizza, competitors finally meeting face to face after years of trading seeds and messages online. Come the day itself, the floor fills up with booths from Fast Buds, Mephisto, Humboldt Seed Co., Mendo 20/20, and plenty more. 

There's an education room digging into real lab analytics and genetics, and one line that stuck with people this year was that you can hit an F7 auto in the time it takes to get to an F2 photo. That alone tells you how fast this whole category is moving. 

There's a Mental Health Panel run by MadManPlant, because the human side of growing matters just as much as the plants do. DJ Linafornia keeps the room going. And Adam Ill is back for his fourth year running the awards night. 

Growers who only ever knew each other by username end up talking shop like they've been friends for years.

That's what five years actually built. A home base the whole scene comes back to once a year, competition and all. And it happens in one of the best rooms in the country, Be True, right in the heart of LA.

2027 is loading

On January 30, 2027, the 5th American Autoflower Cup comes back to Be True LA, and it's already shaping up to be the biggest one yet. 

Half a decade in, the community is bigger and hungrier than ever, so for the anniversary we're going all out. Bigger turnout, a louder room, and entertainment we haven't tried before.

This one's a milestone, and we plan on treating it like one. Five editions in, the growth hasn't slowed, and the community hasn't thinned out. That's reason enough to go big.

We're not looking to repeat last year. We're looking to beat it.
